But Stand Firm

Speaker: Matt Boswell Series: Established in Joy: A Study of Philippians Passage: Philippians 3:17– 4:1

When it comes to spiritual growth, we might say that much more is caught than is taught. When we think about our growth as disciples of Christ, we often don't realize the many ways that we have been shaped by the spirituality of others in our lives. Much of our theological formation, our patterns of thinking, our understanding of Scripture, even our vocabulary is learned from watching those who have influenced us in our faith. The Bible actually encourages us to pattern our lives after those who are Godly examples in striving to know Christ. In short, we need to both follow those who model biblical spirituality – and also grow to be followers of Christ that are worth others imitating.

The main idea of our passage is that in order for us to stand firm in our faith, we need to follow Godly examples. It is seasoned saints that will help model for us what it looks like to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Paul wants to motivate us to continued growth in Christ by looking to those who are running with eternity in their eyes, and grace displayed in their lives. Ultimately, Paul wants us to be a people who stand firm in the Lord together as a church family. In Philippians 3:17-4:1 we will see 1. An Invitation to Imitation, 2. A Warning for Enemies of the Cross, 3. A Reminder for People of the Cross, and 4. A Loving Exhortation.
