The King is Coming

Speaker: Matt Boswell Series: The Humble King Topic: Christ Passage: Philippians 2:5–6

The season of Advent is the time of waiting that culminates on Christmas Day. The tradition helps us remember that there was a time of waiting for the promised Messiah to come. For the next four weeks we will see first-hand in the Scripture who this promised King is. Our text will be Philippians 2:6-11, one of the most important passages in the whole of the bible helping us understand the nature and work of Christ. These six verses are often referred to as a “Christ Hymn”, an ancient song that is packed with truths about who Jesus that helps us articulate our theology. These verses are poetic and powerful, packed with certainty and wonder.

The first sermon in our Advent series is titled “The King is Coming” and zoomed in on Philippians 2:6. This passage shows us who the Son of God was before he lay “away in a manger” with the angels praising him on that promised night. We highlight three critical things about who Christ is: the eternal existence of Christ, the identity of Christ, and the humility of Christ. If we are going to know the Christ of the Bible we have to learn of Christ from the Bible. If we listen close to the melody of this passage, it will tune our hearts to sing the glory of Christ.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What do you believe about Jesus?
  2. Is Christ a regular subject in your home? How could he be moreso?
  3. In what ways can you steward your influence or authority to practice humility?

PRAYER

Pray that during the season of Advent we will see someone come to faith in Christ.

Pray for one another to grow in gospel-empowered humility.
