FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is 1:1 Bible Reading?

1:1 is a discipleship initiative that encourages members of The Trails to read the Bible together, one-on-one. This fall, instead of hosting centralized Bible studies for men and women, we are supplying the church with a reading plan, inductive Bible study questions, and recorded teachings, all through an interactive app. The aim is to equip individuals to read and study the Bible with one another.

Why Should I Participate in 1:1 Bible Reading?

The short answer is, you should participate in 1:1 Bible reading to grow in your love for Christ by growing in the knowledge of His word, as you grow in your love for His people. Most Christians understand the importance of being in God's word regularly, but most of us have neglected to read the Bible in community. There is a level of accountability and discipleship that can only happen with others. Ultimately, we believe that 1:1 will help the members of The Trails grow deeper in their faith as they study their Bibles in community with others.

When Does it Start and How Should I Prepare?

We'll launch this fall starting the week of September 13. We'll have a 1:1 kickoff at that evening's Sunday Evening Service, and new material will release every Sunday for eight weeks. Once released, the material will be available indefinitely and you can repeat the study with as many different people as you wish. In the meantime, be praying about who to read with this fall, pre-register online, choose a day of the week, time, and place that works for you and your reading partner, and come to our kickoff on September 13.

How Does it Work?

  1. Find a partner and set a time to meet together. (If you need help finding a partner, sign up here and let us know.)

  2. Download the app and connect with your partner.

  3. Meet with your partner each week. Pray together, read the passage, and work through the discussion questions provided.

  4. Watch or listen to the 1:1 Bible Reading Podcast to dig even deeper into the text. Available on YouTube, Apple, and Spotify.

Who Should I Read the Bible With?

This part is up to you, but here are a few suggestions if you're having trouble thinking of someone:

  1. The Titus 2 Model: In chapter 2 of his letter to Titus, Paul encourages older men and women to teach those who are younger and less mature in the faith. As you consider who to read the Bible with, seek out someone in a different season of life who you can either learn from or mentor.

  2. From Your Community: Community is already naturally built into the lives of The Trails members. Consider reading the Bible with someone you already have a relationship with through your community group or serve team. While 1:1 is something that will happen outside of group or serve time, these communities make for natural opportunities to find Bible reading partners.

  3. Make a New Friend: Consider reading the Bible with someone you don't yet know well. Use the Sunday morning and evening services to meet new people and invite one of them to read the Bible with you. This is a great way to build a friendship with someone.

  4. As an Evangelistic Tool: Some of you may feel called to read the Bible with someone who is not yet a believer. This is a great way to share the gospel and tell others about Jesus. Consider reading the Bible with an unbelieving neighbor, co-worker, or family member.

As some guardrails, we encourage men to read the Bible with other men, and women with other women. Also, adults should not do 1:1 Bible reading with underage individuals, but teens are encouraged to read with other teens.
